Exciting New Country Pavilion |
Malaysia has formed a pavilion for the first time showcasing a whole array of energy-efficient lighting, recycled and/or recyclable products and items from sustainable sources.
Hear What the Malaysia Pavilion Head Says "Our main aims are to promote and explore business opportunities for participating Malaysian companies in East Asia, to create awareness of Malaysian lighting products in Hong Kong, and to enhance bilateral trade between Malaysia and Hong Kong. As part of our export promotional efforts in the Hong Kong market, we’ll bring together six leading Malaysian lighting suppliers to the lighting fair, showcasing a wide range of “Made in Malaysia” products including LED lighting for indoor and outdoor, and decorative lighting for hotels, conference centres and households. The Fair provides a perfect platform to demonstrate the strengths of Malaysia’s lighting industry. Malaysia has had a strong LED starting position due to the similarly structured semiconductor value chain, in which Malaysia has more than 40 years of experience. Realising the growing importance and potential of the LED sector, Malaysian LED companies have invested in advanced production methods to increase their products’ efficiency and quality. Malaysian-made lighting solutions being exported worldwide are well known for innovative designs and high quality."

Design Talent Flourishes in Spring Competition |
The Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition assembled designers and students to create beautiful and innovative lighting designs to the theme 'Blossom Blooms'. The judges were looking for originality and functionality in designs which captured the vibrancy of the Spring season.
Entrants in the Open Group and the Student Group vied for trophies and cash prizes. A special Eco Design Award was also incorporated into the competition. Open Group and Student Group had a total of 164 entries. The award-winning pieces can be seen in a special display at the fair, located at Hall 1C concourse.

Open group finalists at a glance: |
A decorative light that can be used at home or in a retail environment. The design draws inspiration from the beauty of a sleeping bud about to burst into bloom in spring. It has two lighting modes with soft light seeping through petals or brighter light shining in a full blossom. It is made of Silicone rubber and LED.
Title: The Bloom
Designer Name: Chan San Sang |
Spring gives us hope and vitality. Light of Growth is a natural lampshade with hydroponic plants. The low consumption LED provides specific wavelength to foster plant growth at night. This hydroponic décor lighting design reflects the vibrancy and liveliness of spring through interactions as users care for the plants. It is mainly made of reborn glass.
Title: Light of Growth
Designer Name: Chan Ka Lok |
This geometric and minimal design comes with a singing bird standing on the branch with blooming flowers. It tells us spring has arrived. Combining different materials such as solid pine wood, brass and paper, Birdy Lamp keeps you in good company by lighting up your desk and bedside as well as warming your heart.
Title: Birdy Lamp
Designer Name: Ng Wing Yin |
An innovative line of lamps that highlight the visual qualities of the natural imperfections of handmade paper materials. The design is easy to assemble and allows users to fold, shape and fix paper lampshades randomly and to play with the colour and texture, thus evoking a mood of imperfect aesthetics through the luminary.
Title: Imperfect Beauty
Designer Name: Lau Kit Yan, Tiffany |
This design mimics a flower and integrates the elegance in simplicity and symmetry based on the geometry of flower petals. The lamp fixture makes use of the petals as physical support, heat sink and reflector while the opening of petals can adjust the illumination area. It also has a dimming function with colour temperature change.
Title: The Hanging Petals
Designer Name: Chan Kwong Cheung, Joseph
|
The design concept is to infuse new life to ordinary things. By recycling durable and tough old jeans as lampshade and an interesting hanger structure, the lamp stands out as a bright and environmentally-friendly device. This contemporary and eco-chic design can be used as a standalone lighting or in a cluster in varied heights for different applications.
Title: Old Jeans New Lights
Designer Name: Wong Hang Wa
|
This smart lighting device combines the practical utility of a standard white bulb, the party fun of multi-coloured lights, and the longevity and cost-saving benefit of an LED light bulb. It works well with existing standard bulb sockets already in use and can be controlled easily from a proprietary application on mobile smart phone.
Title: Lumen Plus (TL900)
Designer Name: Chan Ka Wai |
Butterflies open their wings to meet the coming of spring. This LED lamp goes nicely with most interior décor and exudes an aesthetic feeling. The design allows you to have a narrow or broad beam of light. With the use of shape-memory alloys, the butterfly wings open when exposed to heat and close when they cool down.
Title: Butterfly Love Blossom
Designer Name: Chan Hok Chee, Horace

Hear What Judges Say
“This is an important design competition for the lighting industry and it has drawn attractive designs this year. We have witnessed a high standard of design and creativity particularly among the entries of the Student Group. I really like the imaginative ideas of the participating students. They have come up with good design concepts although some of them need to be fine-tuned to enhance their marketability. The Champion’s creative work is especially impressive offering something very interesting with a complete design concept. Everything looks good from the use of materials to packaging and marketability.”
Ada Fung, JP, President, The Hong Kong Institute of Architects
"This competition offers a wonderful opportunity especially for students to display talents, explore possibilities and gather experiences. Among the entries of this year, there are some interesting designs. Some contestants can really think out of the box to create something new and special with an artistic approach. One of the entries uses vegetable fibre to make paper and then produce shades with special lighting effects. Another contestant also comes up with a novel form and interesting composition using natural materials like wood and brass.”
Brian Lee, Vice President, Industrial Designers Society of Hong Kong
“The entries of this year have demonstrated even stronger environmental awareness than last year. It’s great to see contestants come up with new lighting designs using various environmentally-friendly materials. I am particularly impressed with the creative entries of the Student Group. The Champion’s winning piece makes a clever use of drinking straws and combines the DIY approach to provide extra family fun for the customers. It is very encouraging to see continuous improvements among students’ designs each year. ”
Dennis Lau, JP, Chairman, The Association of Architectural Practices
“Contemporary lighting comes in various forms and styles. Multiple colours are gaining popularity and smart lighting solutions backed by new technologies are winning consumers’ hearts. Going green is definitely a major trend for lighting today as designers make use of more eco-friendly or recycled items such as bamboo fabric and decomposable plastic materials to create stylish products. Some of the contestants in the Student Group this year have obviously adopted the green approach to increase the appeal of their works. This design competition provides a great opportunity for students in particular to learn from one another and stimulate better ideas.”
Winnif Pang, Ex-Chairman, Hong Kong Designers Association
