Hear What the Judge Says
“We have seen a high level of creativity among the entries of this year’s design competition. The contestants of the Open Group showcased a rich variety of design concepts and demonstrated a strong level of attention to detail. It’s great to see such a diversity. Lighting is more than an illumination or decoration tool. An appropriate light fixture blends in well with various human senses like sight, touch and even taste to provide a comfortable living space. We have to think out of the box in the process of design. Good design is not necessarily about the fixture itself but the coordinated environment it illuminates. This competition provides an opportunity to drive creativity. Young designers can capitalise on this platform to take on a challenge and think differently to explore more possibilities. Through the competition, the participating contestants will be able to pursue new designs with aspirations.” Vincent Ng, President, The Hong Kong Institute of Architects

“The Asian Lighting Forum helps to enhance the awareness of IoT and connectivity coming to the lighting industry. Asia is set to be the engine powering the next lighting revolution. In my opinion, the change to LED lighting is almost complete while IoT triggers new exciting opportunities to improve lighting comfort and increase energy efficiency. Lighting can help accelerate IoT connectivity in general. Smart lighting applications are also entering our homes because the cost of connectivity is decreasing quickly.” Tjaco Middel, Head of R&D APAC, Tridonic China
“The global LED lighting industry has witnessed diversified trends. In Europe, high electricity prices, sophisticated lighting culture and the ability to assemble lighting products are driving the development of the LED lighting market. In North America, the emergence of local assembly lines, a strong US dollar and subsidy policies have also contributed to a strong growth in demand for lighting products, and new construction projects are fueling the rapid development of LED commercial and architectural lighting. In Japan, the development of residential and commercial lighting is becoming mature and steady, while industrial and outdoor lighting is yet to be developed. On the Chinese mainland, the demand for architectural lighting remains positive, but there are many suppliers and manufacturers, thereby intensifying price competition. Separately, the demand for lighting products in emerging markets such as Southeast Asia, South America, India and Africa is on the rise.” Terri Wang, Senior Analyst, LEDinside, TrendForce Corp
